- Opus Art Supplies Newsletter
Redesign for September 2012
- As part of an overall refinement of the Opus Art Supplies image, I made some recommendations for improving the newsletter design and layout.First, to replace the mix of typefaces used in the past, Opus switched to a cohesive a typeface that is versatile, readable, and suitable an art supply store.Second, the stoic, text-heavy layout was changed to favour more colourful imagery for the cover, as well as adding cues to the content (expressing the benefits of subscribing, besides the sale information). I added more graphic elements, such as pull-quotes for the main articles, for visual interest. To keep things flexible, the irregular grid was changed to a grid of equal column widths.Third, I recommended more emphasis on useful content, such as How-To information and Artist interviews. I created the creative content in the spreads below, including mixed media painting and photography.Perhaps not coincidentally, sales have been improving since the September 2011, when the redesign was implemented. Note: the logo, and some of the layout decisions, are not my work.

Gift Card for an art supply company.
Started from asking myself "Why not make an ordinary, often generic, commodity like a gift card something really cool that people would be excited to collect?" People now see intrinsic value in the card, rather than just what it will buy them, and often want to keep them once the credit has run out.Creative Direction, Illustration, Graphic Design2011

Cancer agency in BC, Canada, reports to all donors by way of a wide-reaching newspaper insert. This 6 page (report + 2 pages of donors, not shown) insert was in The Vancouver Sun, and replaces a traditional Annual Report.
